"Bridging the Human" is the theme for this year’s Literary Café, another rich offering of stories and poems by BC writers Leona Gom, Elsie K Neufeld, and Joan MacLeod with music from local singer/songwriter Marilee Jones and Vancouver fiddler Sheila Allan.

Elsie K Neufeld, a well-known local poet, personal historian, and life-story instructor, published her first chapbook "Grief Blading Up" last fall, and was editor-in-chief of "Half in the Sun: Anthology of Mennonite Writing (Ronsdale Press, 2006).

Leona Gom has published in journals and anthologies world-wide, has written six books of poetry, and eight fiction works, most recently a novel The Exclusion Principle (Sumach Press, 2009). Two full-length plays were produced by the CBC.

Playwright Joan Macleod’s highly acclaimed plays "are profoundly rooted in real-life challenges to the human spirit, but always avoid sermons and transcend political viewpoints." She has received two Chalmers Canadian Play Awards and the Governor General’s Award and continues to write poetry, prose and for television.

Local singer/songwriter Marilee Jones and Vancouver fiddler Sheila Allan perform songs remarkable for their striking harmonies interwoven with sensuous violin melodies. Their music draws influences from Celtic, Ukrainian and Franch Canadian music.

A number of paintings by painter and writer Melody Goetz will be on display. Melody approaches painting as an exploration of varied styles and subjects, with constant interest in the layers and currents under the surface of things, particularly in people, landscapes and trees. She has published train to Mombasa (2000), a poetry chapbook, and this small window: true stories from well-aged people (2009).
