Friday, July 15 8:30pm Memorial Hall Haiti’s Ti-Coca & Wanga Nègès was formed around David Mettelus (Ti-Coca), one of the country’s most famous singers. He got his nickname from someone likening his diminutive statue to a small coke bottle. He has a raspy, lived-in voice which can morph from crooner to gruff, alcohol-crazed contradanse ‘caller and everything in between; once heard is not easily forgotten.
Ti-Coca and his band Wanga Nègès have been playing their acoustic twoubadou (troubadour) music since 1976. The band consisting of double bass, banjo, accordion and maraca, combined with Ti-Coca’s charming voice perform music derived from French contradances, mascarons, and quidrilles which have been enriched by native cultures, ie. descendants of African slaves. Ti-Coca & Wanga Nègès is presented with the support of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. Tickets: $25.00 ($22 till June 24); Senior/child $22.00 ($20 till June 24)
