The Beating Heart: Spirit of Sts’ailes

The Harrison Festival is honoured to present the work of a number of the fine artists from the Sts'ailes First Nation.   The Festival has a long history of working with the people of Sts'ailes, showcasing their vibrant culture and acknowledging that Harrison Hot Springs is within traditional Sts'ailes territory.

Sts’ailes invites you to experience the beautiful culture, talented artisans, and artistic traditions in a variety of mediums: handmade drums, cedar bark and cedar root weavings, hand spun wool works, small to monumental cedar carvings, limited edition prints, original works, and contemporary and traditional clothing designs.

“Our name, Sts’ailes, meaning the Beating Heart, comes from halfway up the west side of Harrison Lake. In this spot, Xals, the Transformer, battled a once-powerful shaman called the Doctor and turned him to stone. In an effort to preserve and limit him, Xals broke apart pieces of his body and spread them throughout the territory, creating landmarks. Where his heart landed became known as our village, Sts’ailes.”

Throughout the month of July a number of the exhibiting Sts’ailes artists will do demonstrations, talks and workshops at the Ranger Station Art Gallery. Carving, drum and drum stick making, dream catchers, medicine bags, cedar bark and root weaving among others will be demonstrated. Schedules of activities will be available at the Plaza Information Booth and Ranger Station Art Gallery.

ERNIE EAVES

THE SPIRIT TRAIL

The Spirit Trail is an exhibit of some of the ceramic masks and faces that Ernie Eaves has created and placed along a forest trail in Harrison Hot Springs. This display, as part of the Harrison Festival of the Arts, is meant to entice you into talking the easy walk along the trail to try to spot the forty-five works he has hung in the trees.

Ernie became involved in the ceramic arts soon after his retirement as a high school shop and theatre teacher four years ago. He has a small studio in his garage in which he throws pots (sometimes against the wall), sculpts and tries to figure out how to glaze stuff.

We are pleased to present our 14th annual visual art exhibit in conjunction with the Harrison Festival of the Arts. We aspire to be a key destination during the Festival for people who enjoy viewing visual art in a quiet, relaxed, and comfortable indoor environment. Our exhibit features a variety of local and area artists and artisans working with various media. As the exhibit host, Harrison Gospel Chapel encourages creative expression as it sees artistic inspiration a component of God’s creative spirit.

All are welcome to attend our annual Faith and Art Sunday worship services on July 10 and 17 @ 10:30 am at the church. These services will focus on the intersection of faith and art. The exhibit will be open for viewing immediately following the services.
