What is the Harrison Festival Society?

The Harrison Festival Society is a registered nonprofit society governed by a board of directors and employing a staff of three.  The Society presents the Harrison Festival of the Arts annually in July.  The Harrison Festival marks its 30th anniversary in 2008 and has grown steadily since it began in 1978.  In addition to the July Festival, the Society presents twelve to fourteen events throughout the rest of the year.  For the past 20 years, the Society has presented over 140 concerts and 20 theatre productions as well as various other events.

The work that the Society does is based on two very strongly held beliefs.  The first is that good quality live performing arts are an extremely important part of a healthy community and as a result they should be available to people within their local area.  People in smaller areas should not have to travel to large urban centres to experience performing and visual arts.  Over the years the Society has been able to combine the intimacy of a small town with the quality of performance normally only found in large cities.

The second belief is in the importance of celebrating the cultural diversity of Canada and the world.  The Society believes that understanding and acceptance of ethnic and cultural diversity is one of the strengths of our country and of our community.  The role of the Arts, and consequently the Society’s role, is to reflect this diversity back to the community.  The Arts can help people learn about and appreciate the contribution of different cultures to our common culture.
